About I'm Not Playing: American Racism and Marginalizing Blackness
I'm Not Playing: American Racism and Marginalizing Blackness is a solo exhibition by David Byre-Tyre featuring conceptual 3D sculptures with themes related to African - American history and identity. The opening reception for this exhibition will be held on Friday, October 10th from 5 - 8 pm at Bank of the Arts.
Born and raised here in New Bern, North Carolina, David Byer-Tyre believes that art is an extension of his professional development as an educator, scholar, and community advocate. Most of his artwork examines the historical and social relevance of art objects that represent African-American culture and persons of African descent. Byre Tyre has recieved several degrees for his studies including a doctorate in education from St. John’s University, a Masters in Fine Arts at Long Island University C.W. Post, with a concentration on sculpture and African-American Material Culture, a Bachelors of Fine Arts in sculpture
from Georgia State University, and a Bachelors of Arts in Drawing and Painting from St. Augustine College.
